Funeral Home Fees Explained: Costs and What They Cover

Understand funeral home fees for basic services, embalming, transportation and a hearse, with published-price examples and questions to ask before choosing.

Last reviewed

Funeral home fees describe different parts of the arrangements: planning and staff services, care of the body, transportation, facilities and merchandise. A price for one item is not the price of a complete funeral. Start by asking what the quoted price includes, what is charged separately, and whether the same service already appears inside a package.

The Federal Trade Commission's pricing checklist separates basic services, other services and goods, and purchases made through outside suppliers. That distinction can make a long price list easier to read. You can compare one decision at a time.

What does the basic services fee cover?

The basic services fee is the funeral home's charge for its core planning and coordination work. Read the description beside the amount. It does not mean every service, vehicle or item you choose is included. The FTC explains that optional services and merchandise are separate from this fee.

For a concrete example, Regency's March 1, 2026 price list lists $1,095 for basic services. Its description includes consultation, coordinating requested services and filing documentation. The same list says this fee is already included in its direct-cremation, immediate-burial and forwarding charges. Adding it again to those package prices would double count that part of the cost.

Are embalming and other preparation the same charge?

A preparation price needs its full label. In Regency's list, embalming is $525 and dressing, cosmetology and casketing appear separately at $185. Emerson's June 5, 2026 list instead labels a $595 line as embalming and preparation of the body. Emerson also lists dressing, grooming, cosmetizing and casketing separately at $95. Ask which lines apply to your arrangements; do not infer that a combined label covers every preparation service.

Those two labels illustrate why an embalming-only average should not silently include every charge containing the word embalming. The price, description and any additional work belong together.

What is the difference between transfer and a hearse?

The initial transfer brings the body to the funeral home. A hearse is a separate vehicle item in the lists reviewed here. A quoted transfer price can have a distance limit, so comparing only the first dollar figure can miss part of the charge.

Emerson lists $295 for the first transfer within 25 miles and $295 for its funeral coach, or hearse. These are two separate entries, not a $295 total for all transportation. Ask about the pickup location, destination, included mileage and any extra trip or vehicle charge.

What did the collected price lists show?

PartingPoint's November 2 research catalogue contains 53 candidate records. Four base-fee groups can be summarized from 52 records with archived full sources. The catalogue below exposes the individual amounts and known shared-document qualifications. The remaining record stays in the catalogue with these amounts marked unknown. Eight lists have printed 2025 dates; they are retained with those dates, not relabeled as new prices.

For basic services, 52 observations had an arithmetic mean of $2,207.79 and a median of $2,097.50, ranging from $700 to $4,900. For embalming-only, 51 observations had a mean of $799.22 and a median of $775, ranging from $425 to $1,350. Emerson's combined $595 line remains visible separately.

For initial transfer, 52 observations had a mean of $468.37 and a median of $445, ranging from $175 to $950. For a hearse, 52 observations had a mean of $394.33 and a median of $375, ranging from $185 to $800. Distance, time and package conditions differ; these figures describe posted base charges, not equivalent all-inclusive quotes.

These are summaries of the collected records, not national or regional averages, paid transaction prices, or 53 independent businesses. Related providers and shared documents may occur. The four averages must not be added into an estimated funeral bill: they are different services drawn from partly different groups, and some services may already be bundled or not chosen at all.

Which other costs should I check?

Keep a separate place in your comparison for facilities and staff, merchandise, and outside-provider charges. The FTC checklist includes cemetery and marker costs separately. Ask for the specific items your arrangements need and record an unknown price as unknown, rather than zero.

The examples also show that timing can matter. Emerson's list adds $350 for Sunday, $550 for a holiday and $200 for an evening service after 5 p.m. These are that provider's published conditions, not standard surcharges at every funeral home. Ask which conditions apply to the proposed date and time before comparing totals.

Source catalogue: the records behind the four fee groups

The following 53 records preserve the original collection order. Amounts are U.S. dollars: basic services, embalming, initial transfer and hearse. The figures describe selected posted base line items, not complete packages. Shared-document flags identify known unresolved branch applicability; a document-associated record is not a verified quote for an operating branch. Ownership independence and full branch applicability have not been established across this collection. For sources containing several schedules, the extraction uses the first identified schedule; the record is kept once and is not a claim that its prices apply to every named location.

Every available amount below contributes to its named group, except the separately labeled combined embalming/preparation line. The unarchived record contributes no fee amount. Related operators and shared documents are retained as records, without weighting or pretending they are independent businesses. These are an audit of the collected documents, not a survey of market prices.

Step by step

Compare the same arrangements

  1. Choose the services to compare

Ask each provider for an itemized quote for the same arrangements. Keep the same service choices in each request so that you can identify which items are included and which would cost extra.

    Who does it
    The person arranging the funeral
  2. Separate included and extra charges

Mark each item as included, extra, not selected or unknown. Ask whether a package already contains a charge that also appears separately. Keep the same service choices in each request so that you can identify which items are included and which would cost extra.

  3. Keep dates and conditions beside the price

Record the quote date and price-list date. Confirm mileage, timing and any additional conditions before comparing totals. Keep the same service choices in each request so that you can identify which items are included and which would cost extra.

Questions families ask

Does the basic fee include embalming and a hearse?

Do not assume it does. Check the specific list and package: Regency lists these as separate items while including its basic fee in certain package prices.

Can I use a 2025 price list?

It can show what the provider published for that effective date. Keep it in the evidence, label its year and ask the provider for a current quote before treating it as today's price.

Are the figures above average funeral costs in the United States?

No. These figures describe posted basic-service, embalming, initial-transfer and hearse line items in the collected source records. They are neither national estimates nor a complete funeral total, and they do not show what a particular family would pay.

Why are there 53 records but fewer prices in each average?

One record lacks an archived full source for these items. The combined embalming/preparation line is also kept out of the embalming-only group; neither missing nor noncomparable information is replaced with zero.
